One of the most renowned realities of national and international tourism, accomplices in their beauty together with Porto Cervo to embellish the prestige of Gallura on the north-eastern coast of Sardinia.
Porto Rotondo extends over 500 hectares of land between the 2 gulfs of Cugnana and Marinella, in its tourist port among the most characteristic live several residents even in winter, while in the summer season it reaches peaks of 30 thousand inhabitants. Historically the village dates back to 1964 when the Venetian Counts Luigi and Nicolò Donà dalle Rose, as part of an initiative wanted by a group of entrepreneurs, began the first project works for the construction of the port inside the bay with the characteristic round shape.
To see: the Church of S. Lorenzo, designed and embellished in 1966 by the sculptors Andrea Cascella at the behest of the Counts Donà delle Rose and completed inside by Mario Ceroli with local workers, completed in 1971 today the small Church of San Lorenzo is truly one of a kind.
In 2008 the Consortium took on, at the request of the Porto Rotondo Foundation, responsibility for the management and care of the Church and all the consequent costs. In the same year, various works to complete the church and the construction of the wooden bell tower began (designed by Mario Ceroli and the architect Gianfranco Fini).
To see: The Porto Rotondo Theater, is certainly the most beautiful stage in Gallura. Designed on the idea of the sculptor Mario Ceroli (church of S. Lorenzo) and built by the architects Gianfranco Fini and Marina Sotgiu. Its work began in 1972, while the inauguration took place in 1995. Still active today, the calendar of shows that can be seen is very rich. In its beauty and majesty, it is entirely made of local granite with different shades and colors in graphic-chromatic combinations.
Must see: The Piazzetta San Marco is certainly the most glamorous summer meeting point in Porto Rotondo where you can sit in company for the typical aperitif with a fresh glass of Vermentino di Gallura or enjoy unique cocktails! The square was designed in a circular shape looking at the port by the sculptor Andrea Cascella, the magnificent staircase entirely in granite, from the center of the square leads to the church of San Lorenzo.
Must see: The Porto Rotondo Yacht Club today is an undisputed destination for sailors, enthusiasts and young sailing champions, the school produces record-breaking sailing excellences every year. The pennant with a white background is hoisted on the plume: in the center is depicted the face of the lion of San Marco holding in its claws the coat of arms of the four Moors, the typical flag of Sardinia. The Y.C.P.R is a unique location in its white wooden architecture and marine character, certainly an excellent place to enjoy in its particular internal restaurant (only by reservation) excellent seafood dishes and find very rare labels of international spirits.
Must see: The Food Chain by Emmanuel Chapalain. The work commissioned by the Porto Rotondo Foundation was completed in 2016 by the artist Emmanuel Chapalain. The walkway that goes from the church to the port down Via del Molo was made entirely by hand in gray granite san pietrino by expert local craftsmen. In detail it was embellished with the representation of the marine food chain allowing the spectator who walks to follow the phases from beginning to end along the road that leads to the port. The scenes depict majestic sharks, tuna and swordfish swimming among the waves, in stainless steel artefacts “drowned” in the walkway.
The eyes of some fish light up in the evening to the surprise of the little ones who walk on them.
